Relier; the translation is to rebind and it is the root of the French term for book binder, a relieur. There are reliure ateliers throughout Paris and it is still a thriving metier. But within the profession there are artisans and artists. The artists take books or manuscripts that inspire them and turn a simple books into a work of art. They bind books into wooden puzzles or lace bound seashells. They may use nuts and bolts to replace the traditional glue. The work can be cutting edge modern or timeless elegance. The books become as much of a delight to behold as they are to hold. For the month of April, the APPAR (Association for the Promotion of the Arts of Relieur) is holding an exhibition of stunning pieces bound by some of it’s most respected members at 102 rue du Cherche Midi in the 6th arrondisement. The space is open 7 days a week.
